DEVELOPING LINGUISTIC SELF-STUDY AS ONE OF THE STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES OF FOREIGN LANGUAGE EDUCATION AT THE UNIVERSITY LEVEL

Bobykina I.A.

Abstract

This paper analyzes the development of linguistic self-study among university students as one of the innovative trends in pedagogical practice. The author justifies the need to revise the goals, organization, content, teaching techniques and quality requirements of professional linguistic education in accordance with the current stage of social development in Russia and tendencies in higher education and describes the essence and general trend in the development of linguistic self-study culture based on the philosophical idea of human self-development as a mechanism of internal change. Special attention is paid to the description of meaningful and cumulative human ability to educate oneself using a foreign language. The paper considers the structural and parametric components of linguistic self-study as a source of personal and professional growth and analyzes external and internal characteristics of independent learning behavior as a personal quality affecting the level of personal self-awareness. A special emphasis is placed on the importance of self-identification contributing to students’ involvement and active participation in the learning porcess. The author also considers praxeological aspects in the development of self-study foreign language practices along with the theoretical and methodological basics. Based on the functional analysis of self-study activity, the paper describes the way self-study skills are acquired by university students and considers a classification of strategies providing for the choice of the strategy appropriate for particular conditions of self-development. The analysis of theoretical and empirical data showed correlations between sociocultural, didactic, and personal levels of self-study. These correlations, being a complex of stable links and principles (social, didactic, special), specify the requirements to organizing the process of life-long learning with the help of a foreign language.

APPROACHES TO SHAPING THE STRATEGIC COMPETENCE WHEN TRAINING TO READ FOR SPECIFIC PURPOSES

Buteva V.E.

Abstract

This paper attempts to analyze modern approaches to training to read and to emphasize the approaches used with a beneficial effect on shaping the strategic competence in training to read for specific purposes. Within this subject, four approaches are considered, including a communicative active approach, specific purpose approach, reflexive approach and cognitive communicative approach. The strategic competence in the process of training to read for specific purposes is defined as a personal ability to use the range of means/actions based on the obtained knowledge and skills in order to understand the idea of a text. The strategic competence is based on knowledge, skills and abilities to use educational strategies for mastering competences in speech and language and also communicative strategies, knowledge of psycho-cognitive characteristics of students in technical higher education schools. The process of training to read foreign texts for specific purposes should be based on the cognitive communicative approach where the process of reading is considered to be an intellectual process. Here two aspects are of particular importance: the way readers state the idea of a text and the information they receive from it. Shaping the strategic competence in the process of training to read for specific purposes improves the skills of mature reading skills, lexical and grammar skills, digestion and conferment of knowledge, and intellectual development of students. The main principles of training within cognitive communication approach lie in conscious teaching that makes students flexible when choosing the strategies for reading texts for specific purposes. Reading strategy is a targeted and regulated sequence of definite actions of a person, which achieves the desired results in reading. When guiding students in choosing proper strategies, one should consider reading mechanisms that function during the perception, prediction and comprehension of the information. The study proves that the process of shaping the strategic competence needs to be based on inquisitive reading, with an account for psycho-linguistic models of the reading process development. The range of strategies depends upon the reading tasks. During inquisitive reading, a student pays attention to the detailed perception of a text, thus preparing oneself for the intuitive perception of the text form and detailed understanding of the content. Thus, this methodology is based on the cognitive communicative approach, where reading mechanisms are regarded in accordance with intellectual processes occurring in students’ minds during comprehension and extraction of the proper information from texts for specific purposes.

TRAINING BACHELOR STUDENTS FOR FUTURE WORK IN THE FIELD OF MORAL AND SPIRITUAL EDUCATION

Istomina I.P.

Abstract

This study considers the issue of training bachelor students for future work in the field of moral and spiritual education. Moral and spiritual education is prioritized in the Federal State Education Standards and in the Strategy for Education Development in the Russian Federation until 2025. The author states that training students to work in the field of moral and spiritual development should be viewed not only as a state policy requirement, but also as a current pedagogical task which reflects the needs of modern Russian society where morality has decreased and spiritual and moral values have been significantly deformed. The paper proves the necessity to educate students so that they have knowledge, skills and abilities to organize their future work of development of moral and spiritual values during the educational process. The author suggests a possible solution for the specified issue in the form of a course aimed at shaping the following competencies: ability to develop moral and spiritual values through extracurricular activities; readiness to interact with the participants of educational process; ability to organize cooperation among students and to support their active and involved participation, support their autonomy and develop their creative abilities. The paper presents the major content of the «Basics of origin studies» course which discusses the basic concepts of moral and spiritual development of Russian students. This course is a part of sociocultural educational program «Social and cultural roots». The paper presents a diagnostic toolkit designed by the author for group student work. The author believes that the course «Basics of origin studies» taught with the help of active teaching and learning methods will allow developing professional competencies to further nurture basic national values.

DEVELOPMENT OF THE CONCEPT OF GENERAL CULTURAL COMPETENCY: ANALYSING THE THIRD GENERATION OF THE FEDERAL STATE EDUCATION STANDARDS OF HIGHER EDUCATION

Klementsova N.N.

Abstract

The paper is devoted to the way the concept of general cultural competency is interpreted by the Federal State Education Standards of Higher Education. General cultural competency of a graduate is regarded as one of the learning outcomes and as a crucial factor of the student’s personality development. The author addresses the description of the outcomes arising from mastering major educational programs, covering diverse profiles and levels of vocational training. The aim pursued is to reveal the way these results correspond to the requirements to train a new type specialist characterized not only by high professional qualities but also by general personal culture and educated behavior. The author points at some shortcomings linked with the description of the results of educational activity in terms of general cultural competency, testifying to a low degree of standardization of these results postulated by the Federal State Education Standards. Since the 3+ generation standards eliminate the exposed shortcomings only partially, there is a hope that they will be completely eradicated by the 4th generation of the federal standards. The author agrees with the optimistic view shared by the scientific and pedagogical community on the advances in reforming Russian higher education. The author believes that the existence of the revealed problems accompanying the introduction of the Federal State Education Standards, in particular those concerning the description of the results of the educational activity in terms of general cultural competency, shall not question the very possibility and necessity of such a description. This situation can only testify to the complexity of the described object and point at the necessity of thorough revision of the conceptual apparatus used within the Federal Standards. The idea that modern higher vocational education is as inconceivable without its general cultural component the same way efficient personality development is impossible without personal culture development, remains unaltered.

DEVELOPING PROFESSIONAL CONCEPTS THROUGH FOREIGN LANGUAGE STUDIES

Korzh T.N.

Abstract

The paper is devoted to developing the system of professional concepts among students of non-linguistic higher education institutions within LSP (language for special purposes) studies. Professional orientation of language courses opens up new opportunities for developing professional competences of future professionals through integrating language studies and linking them into occupational and general scientific disciplines. The author specifies the content of the LSP course in the light of cognitive sciences, such as cognitive psychology and cognitive linguistics focusing on mental processes, namely representation, storage and retrieval of knowledge. The cognitive and communicative approach is considered to be optimal for the LSP teaching and learning processes in non-linguistic higher education institutions when cognitive functions of language become dominant. In such cases professional concepts become the organizational units of professional knowledge and constitute the system of professional concepts. An LSP course should have three stages. The goal of the first stage is to develop general language competence based on general or popular science texts. The second stage provides for mastering the proper LSP content on the basis a tailor-made course with authentic text studies. The knowledge and skills acquired at this stage are used for further development of professional language proficiency at the final stage. A tailor-made course «Basics of Banking» illustrates the development of professional concepts among students majoring in finance and banking.

DEFINING THE CRITERIA FOR ASSESSMENT OF STUDENT TRANSLATIONS

Plekhanova Y.V.

Abstract

The article concentrates on the criteria development problems related to assessing students’ translations in the process of their education; examines the methods of evaluation applied by various scholars. Many attempts have been made over the last fifty years to analyse and assess translation quality ranging from Naida and the analysis of the final product to Darbelnet’s identification of nine parameters according to which the quality of a translation should be assessed, and from Vermeer’s skopos theory to evaluation through discourse analysis by Bensoussan and Rosenhose. The article examines several models, which have been created by institutional organisations: the Canadian Language Quality Measurement System (Sical) developed by the Canadian government’s Translation Bureau, ATA (American Translators Association) has developed a scheme, which includes twenty-two error types , Blackjack, developed by the British translation agency ITR containing 21 error categories etc. The article deals with the problem of translation error classifications, the author reviews existing classifications and points out a challenging task of identifying error types in students’ imperfect translations works.

LIFELONG LEARNING: BASICS OF MANAGEMENT INNOVATIONS

Prikot O.G.

Abstract

The paper offers a possible solution for identifying methodological basis of designing management innovations in the context of lifelong learning in Russia. It is obvious that lifelong learning is going through the institutionalization and this process requires adequate management on all levels of education. However, methodological approaches to be used as a basis for all administrative decisions are yet to be determined. Moreover, so far this issue has not become as widely discussed in the education community. The purpose of this study is to synthesize current methodological and philosophical ideas concerning the dialectics of animate and inanimate, linear and nonlinear in the education systems and to unite the results arising from attempts to create the conditions for formal institutionalization of lifelong learning within current legal regulations. The study describes organizational theories applied for establishing educational organizations that develop in the context of lifelong learning institutionalization and renders on the ideological basics of effective school as described by P. Mortimer, namely, a special case of multi-rational organizational system developed for the educational purposes. The author concludes that the aforementioned contexts are localized within the legal framework of a particular educational organization. It means that while managing the process of bringing the institutional legal framework in coherence with the current legal acts of a higher level, a manager should be aware of the grounds on which the development and introduction of these regulations was started in the first place. The study is based on such major research methods as philosophical and methodological analysis of current education systems, legal analysis of the regulatory framework of lifelong learning institutionalization, procedures of systems synthesis. The research results are used in the system of continuing occupational education, and in the process of professional retraining and further training of management staff.

Baybakova T.V., Lyalikova N.N.

Abstract

The popularity of streetball is increasing every day. The game features high speed and a wide variety of attacking and defending actions. A streetball game played on small area places special demands on the technical, tactical, psychological and physical fitness of the players. Players need to have a universal skill set and be ready to act as a playmaker, a striker or a centre. Therefore, for greater efficiency, training and improvement of technical-tactical actions (TTD) is parallel to mastering the technical and tactical interactions. The paper determines semester structure in the annual training of student basketball players. It includes the following mesocycles: retractor, basic, precompetitive, competitive and recovery-support and four-week schedule for training students for competitions, where special attention is paid to improving speed, coordination abilities and tactical interactions. Experimental learning technology allows us to create the conditions for a step-by-step development of autonomous modules, implement interim control coinciding with the completion of each module. It also allows giving more attention to the quality development of technical and tactical techniques (TTP), specific actions in streetball through consistent training, highlighting priority elements in technique and tactics. Applying modular technology in training sessions enables basketball players to improve the performance of TTD and competitive-gaming activity via special exercises. Korichko Y.V.

Abstract

Sports aerobics is a precise sport characterized by the ability of athletes to perform a continuous complex of different music-accompanied highly intensive movements derived from traditional dance. An aerobic competitive program is any exercise in which athletes demonstrate continuous and highly intensive complex of movements, including a combination of acyclic movements with complex coordination, as well as various complex elements of different structural groups and interaction between the partners (mixed duets, triples and groups). The paper presents the results of the analysis of the correlation between general and special physical fitness indicators among 12-14 year old girls involved in training for sports aerobics (the stage of sports specialization). We have analyzed the results according to the features of composition and structure of specific movements in sport aerobics competition combinations based on the analysis of the sports competition video and results of the survey among coaches. The study has revealed that general and special physical fitness indicators in sports aerobics are rather specific and closely related to the indicators of control-transfer standards in related technical and aesthetic sports. The features revealed in the competitive content of individual sports aerobics programs allow developing the most rational approach to the selection of preparatory and bringing exercises in sports aerobics. The study material presented herein can be recommended to sports aerobics coaches planning the training process at the stage of sports specialization, as well as to a wide range of professionals in the field of physical education and sports.

RACING AND SHOOTING COMPONENTS OF THE QUALIFICATION OF HIGHLY SKILLED BIATHLETES AND ITS CONTRIBUTION TO THE FINAL RESULTS OF THE MAJOR COMPETITIVE PROGRAM

Reutskaya E.A., Nikolaev E.M.

Abstract

The purpose of this work is to study the competitive activity of highly qualified biathletes via analyzing the racing and shooting components of their qualification. In order to identify the significance of racing and shooting component in the final sports result, we have analyzed the correlation between the final sports result (the placement in the race) and indicators of competitive activity of highly skilled biathletes. The analysis is based on technical protocols («SIWI-DATA») of the Biathlon World Cup 2015-2016. The results showed that the contribution of the racing and shooting components in the final result in various distances is uneven in its level and manifestation. The contribution of the racing and shooting components in various competitive programs depends on both physical abilities and functional mechanisms of sportsmen, but also on external weather factors, thus predetermining their selective impact. Therefore, in order to achieve high results biathletes must have equally good racing and shooting qualification and be able to use them in accordance with the competitive conditions.

Treshcheva O.L., Karpeeva S.A.

Abstract

This paper studies the racing experience of Katinka Hosszu (Hungary), an elite level female swimmer, multiple world champion and world record holder in individual medley swimming. In 2012-2015 katinka Hosszu became a winner of FINA World Cups, multiple winner of European and World Championships, broke world records fifteen times, and realized her potential in main competitions of each micro-cycle. Our study showed that the number of competitions an athlete takes part in makes an impact on the stability of the sports achievements and duration of sports qualification within a long competitive period, which stimulates the growth in the number of sports achievements. Increased athletic performance during training macrocycle is statistically associated with the total number of starts, indicating the importance of quantitative characteristics of competitive practices to ensure the required pace of sports perfection activity. The paper presents the materials reflecting the volume of competitive practice of the above named Hungarian swimmer as compared with the activity of a top Russian swimmer, a leading Russian swimmer in 2012-2015 in individual medley. The study shows that Hosszu’s volume of racing practices increased annually and the partial volumes swum in competitive distances using different swimming techniques changed, which led to positive changes in 200m medley distance performance and helped the athlete set a world record in 2015. In comparison, the volume of swimming distances of the Russian swimmer was 6-11 times less and it decreased each year. Therefore, her results in 200m medley swimming distance were lower, as well as her performance at main competitions in each micro-cycle.
