The article examines the history and specifics of environmental movements in Brazil. Particular attention is paid to the three stages of the formation of environmental movements and organizations, which are closely related to the political situation in the country. The features of Brazil’s environmental agenda at the beginning of the 21st century are highlighted. It is concluded that it is necessary to revise the basic principles of the modern global environmental agenda in order to identify their compliance with the national interests of Brazil.
